I get asked this question a lot from people. Creating content can be a business owners biggest struggle, because without content you have nothing to post on social or share with your consumers. In this blog I will go over how to decide what the best content would be for your business.
People take in information in 3 ways:
They listen to it
They read it
They watch it.
So knowing that, the first step would be too…
Pick your Format
Deciding which of these avenues you feel most comfortable in and which aligns best with your marketing goals is the first step. For example: If your main goal is to drive traffic to your email list, then creating a video or blog post may be the best route for you.
Maybe you mainly want to provide education to your consumer about your services to build authority in your industry, then maybe a podcast is your best route.

Pick your Topic
Once you know which avenue you are going to create your content for you need to decide on your topic. To do this you need to think of problems that your ideal client needs help with.
For example, say you run a dog training company. What are some of the problems that people who have dogs may encounter? Maybe you want to write a blog post on the “10 best ways to house train your dog “, or maybe you want to record a video on “How to get your dog to roll over”. These are all things that your ideal client, that is looking for a trainer, may be interested in before they hire you.
This is just one form of content. You could also create inspirational content or entertaining content. You just need to decide which would fit your audience and business best.
Once you know how you will produce your content, it’s time to come up with the content topics themselves. There are a couple ways you can do this.
Brain Dump: Take out a sheet of paper and write down everything that comes to mind. You probably have more content ideas than you think! Do not limit yourself on ideas, just let it all flow. Here are some ideas to get you started. Frequently Asked Questions, Work Processes, Behind the Scenes.
Look to Google or YouTube to see what people have been searching for. Did you know that when you start typing In a search term on Google or YouTube that it will give you ideas based on what people have recently searched for? Use this to your advantage. Start typing in keywords to see what comes up.
Look at your Competitors. Remember, It’s ok to look at others information for inspiration just make sure you’re not stealing it.
Ask your Audience: This may seem like a simple one, but sometimes we don’t think to just ask. Use the polls on Instagram stories or Facebook Lives to ask your audience what they would like to see or know from you.
Create your Content
The final step is to create the content itself. This might take some time and practise but after you write a couple blogs or record a couple videos it will get easier, I promise. You will become more familiar with what your audience likes and wants to see. I always recommend that you create larger pieces of content that you can break down into small pieces of information for social media. Also, don’t forget the power of creating your content in batches!
If you decide that blogs are going to be your medium, then pick 4 or 5 topics and write them all at the same time. This will save you so much more time then writing each of them as the due date approaches.
